- External quality audit of universities has been in place for many years in various countries. Government-funded external quality agencies have been set up to undertake audits of universities, private providers, community colleges and other types of providers. There is a general lack of research on the effectiveness of external quality audits in enhancing systems, processes, external compliance and, more importantly, the outcomes in core areas such as learning and teaching, research and engagement. This chapter presents a case study on the effectiveness of external quality audit in a private for-profit tertiary education provider in Australia. The authors argue that external quality audit has been a driver for many changes and improvements within the institution. Such improvements might have occurred in due course; however, the external lever has resulted in rapid changes, driven by senior management, which aim to use the peer review process for reflection and on-going improvement. Improvements are attributed to: the commitment and engagement of the senior management team; the role of the quality units in engaging staff across the institution; the alignment of internal processes with external review methodology; and the use of evidence-based decision making to track and improve quality outcomes.
